I guess it technically started in Abu Dhabi a couple of days ago, but somehow I can never quite count exhibitions (not that I won't be posting about them). But now, RIGHT NOW, Hopman Cup is starting with Australia v. Romania. Sam vs. Sorana.

Known around here as "Baby Marat", says Donkey: "What? He's legal."
He's a biter. Which...can be a good thing.
Speaking of biting, look at those forearms...
Oh fuck it. Why do I even bother. Evgeny is best seen without his shirt.
His body is the bomb diggity. Perfection.
All I can think right now is "BODY SHOTS!!!!"

It wouldn't be the end of the WTA season without one more chance to laugh at people for being completely incapable of dressing themselves. Some of them are getting distressingly (read: boringly) good at it, but you know there'll always be one WTFer in the group. Or two, or three.

Q: Is that because you're not so good looking and keep looking
outside the court which makes you put more focus on your tennis?
And given a chance, would you like to be more good looking or keep
your life going like this?
NIKOLAI DAVYDENKO: Um, you know, if I be if I don't have wife, you
know, maybe I can say, "Yeah, I disappoint I'm not maybe good
looking," yeah, but really I have many girls can be in Russia. I don't
know about China, but in Russia it's I still look good, like feeling
comfortable, you know.

In addition to Moscow, the ATP and WTA each have one more tournament going on this week. Including possibly my favourite-named tournament of the entire year, the "If Stockholm Open".

The biggie for this week is Kremlin Cup; an ATP 250 for the men and a Premier for the women. Since it's the week before Doha, most of the top women are giving Moscow a miss. Never mind that, though, because the four women still in contention for the last spot/alternate status at YEC are all playing. Davai!

Is this for some WTA late-nite ad campaign? Because otherwise I can't figure out what the hell is going on. And if anyone has a clue why Barbara Schett is involved, I'd be extremely interested in some clarification. (I'm not so sure of some of the IDs, either, so feel free to correct.)

1. Is Shawshank Redemption the new Da Vinci Code on the ATP?
2. I'm not sure who the Romanian guy is, but something about envisioning him playing doubles with Ilie Nastase is hilarious.
3. Doubles players are pretty, too! Why hello, Nenad and Mark.
4. Enough of the self-pimping, Bryan brothers. Although the self-pimping might be preferable to listening to "#41" to get "pumped" before a match. The hell?

Okay, a seed lost today in Linz. But it was Iveta Benesova. To Petra Kvitova. I... don't know what to say. I guess I'm mildly surprised that Sybille Bammer lost to Alexandra Dulgheru, but I don't know if that's reasonable or not. Same with Alize Cornet winning a(nother) match.

I truly believe that the ATP and WTA's combined mission to force their players to play "tennis" on every ridiculous surface imagineable (helipads, fountains, water, on top of cars...) knows no bounds. Today's victims? Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco, and a Maglev train.

So far, I have zero enthusiasm for the WTA tournaments going on this week. I mean, in Osaka the one seemingly interesting match (Sam vs. Peng Shuai) didn't even happen, with Peng being replaced by a lucky loser. Whom Sam beat. [yawn] The only even mildly interesting thing that happened was that Jill Craybas beat Kimiko Date Krumm in Sweatin' to the Oldies II, Electric Boogaloo. All the seeds won. Julie Coin lost. Moving on.

That's me, trying to come up with something, anything, to say about things that happened in Linz and Osaka today. Okay, I guess Sania had a nice win over Shahar. I know it's not exactly an upset, given their head-to-head, but with their current rankings, Shahar's recent win streak, and all Sania's injury troubles, it is an outcome I was a little surprised to see. Especially considering the last time I saw Sania, she was getting double bageled by Flava Flav at USO.

For example, you might be able to drop your bag in the middle of the street and sprint after Michael Phelps without a bus coming along and running said bag into the ground. Or you might be able to mysteriously lose a ping pong ball in a completely porous ceiling.

Aga and Caroline are playing doubles together in Toronto, which means some good old-fashioned fun on practice. I will give Papa Wozniacki some credit for trying (although failing) to get Caroline to pick up the mess of balls behind her. Oh well, Coconut and her man harem took care of it later.
