Sam is only a few points behind Venus in the rankings and could very well be ranked #4 going into the Australian Open. Heck one win would do it considering that there's no word on what Venus' warm-up tourney schedule might be and Sam's playing both Brisbane and Sydney.
As a random Sam-aside, I keep reading all these year-end lists and everyone keeps talking about how Sam "underperformed" or had a let-down in the RG final. The thing is, I totally don't remember it that way. I just thought she got outplayed by an inspired Fran. It's not like she came out and played like crap and yet that's how it's being spun. Kind of annoys me.
But the fact that Sam and Dave have finally reviewed the tape and seem to have come to the conclusion that Fran was too good that day, at least I feel like she doesn't feel like it was a let-down. Considering how Dave has historically been super honest and critical of Sam, that means something. Kind of.
