So World #2, Caroline "Ski Boots No More" Wozniacki, picked up the biggest title of her career on Monday, beating Sveta and Bepa in the span of 6 hours to win her first Tier I/Premier tournament. Not too shabby for the 20 year-old, who will head into the US Open as the top seed.
It's easy to snark on the kid. Actually, no it's actually not. She's nice, she works hard, she's brought an air of friendliness to the locker room and as much as I hate on her game (which I actually might come around on if she'd stop with the motherfucking deluge of moonballs), she actually really impressed me in her quarterfinal match against Franny in Montreal. She's beefed up her serve, is trying to come to the net more (with rather comedic results, but you have to like the intention) and it looks like her strokes have a bit more pop so that she can terminate points. She's a solid tactical player, doesn't mentally go off the rails, and is gracious in victory and defeat.
Is it funny to think that she's the top seed at the USO? I mean, yeah. I mean, it's Caro. And I'll keep cracking jokes about it just because it's an easy laugh. But unless she's the one who surreptitiously dropped the razor in a London restaurant that fateful night, it ain't her fault. And if there's one player in the top 10 who could deal with this pressure well, I kind of have to tip my cap to Caro. Nothing seems to faze her. It's really annoying.
I don't know, maybe it's because it's been a long tennis season, or maybe it's the lessons learned from the ripping on Dinara and JJ, or maybe I'm just beaten down by all this travel. But I just think there are more important and interesting things to be concerned with going into the Open.
For example, ZOMG IS SAM'S ARM OK???!?!?!?!??!?
