Vika. Welcome to the FD Shit List.

So I've pretty much given Vika a free pass with her attitude because I have not seen her play too much, I just figured she was like Masha.  Kind of icy but nothing past that.  But having now seen her in person and "interacting" with her, yeah, she sucks hockey pucks.

Here's a run down of my observations:

• On Sunday night we watched her match against Vezzie.  Obviously we were rooting for Elena because really, how can you not?  So we're sitting first row on the left baseline and cheering hard for Vez.  We weren't cheering during the point or cheering against Vika.  Just rooting hard for Vez.  At one point, Vika turns and glares at us and starts complaining to the umpire to shut us up, claiming that we're talking during the point, WHICH WE WEREN'T.  The umpire basically told Vika to just play.  But that was super super lame.
• I've seen her on the practice field a few times and she just doesn't seem to have a sense of humor at all.  She was jogging with her iPod and her fitness coach kept trying to roll a soccer ball over to have her kick it.  She kept looking at him like "what do you think you're doing?" and kept jogging.  The coach had to go jog and get the ball back.
• I can't do it justice but Victoria had an awesome run in with her yesterday. [Insert Victoria's run in here (Victoria -- feel free to post it in the comments]
• The badge incident.  Victoria and nyanafan were at the match for this.  Apparently Vika flipped out for about 5 minutes because some lady's ticket badge was reflecting the sun and was pissing her off.  Instead of just going to the umpire and asking him to take care of it, Vika apparently starts bitchily yelling directly at the fans.
• Autographs.  Ok, you're 17 years old.  The fact that people want your autograph should be a compliment and not something you blow off.  Vika doesn't interact at all and looks super annoyed, and not an awesome way like Dina.  Again, comparing her to her cohorts, she sucks.  Woz and Pavs are totally genuinely happy and excited when people know who they are or say hi to them.  They always look up and acknowledge it with a big smile.  Vika just gives you the stink eye and acts like she's doing you a favor.

The kid's sense of entitlement is off the charts.  I don't care if you're icy or just "not nice".  But being outwardly rude to fans is just wrong.  And if she isn't surrounding herself with a team that teaches her these very basic things she's going to lose fans very quickly.  I know the five of us that have been here this week have pretty much written her off at this point.  All it takes is 2 seconds to make and lose a fan.  I've spent more than 2 seconds watching Vika and I'm totally over it.  She may end up being a star and winning a bunch of Slams and whatnot.  But no thank you.

Too bad it's a night match tonight.  I'm still going to use my "Hey Dinara!  You got this!  She's looking woozy!" cheer.

Tignor's write up on Baby E.  I loved this part because he's articulated exactly what I've always thought but couldn't put into words:

Beyond her game, what's most interesting about Ivanovic is her stealthy intelligence. As I've said, she's a motor mouth, and it's hard to believe she can think with any depth at that speed. Her conversation can sound something like this, from her presser after her opening match:

"NoobviouslythereweresomethingsIwantedtoworkon. Oneofthemwascomingtothenet. ButIactuallyfeltreallyshortoutthere." Pause to see if anyone catches the joke. No. Nobody could follow her. So she gives the explanation: "I got lobbed a couple of times." How did she work that joke in there? There's more depth of mind in Ivanovic than you might believe possible at first. It's heartening to think someone this sunny on the outside can be quick and thoughtful and not angry on the inside. Maybe the truth really is good.

I people don't take her seriously and think she's was a ditz.  Hard not to think that when she's giggling and smiling all the time.  But I'm glad Tignor was able to suss it out.  Hate her for her game, her fist pumping, her ajdeing, etc.  That's fine.  But the kid is genuine to the core.  Everyone, from fans to journalists, says it.  You can't hide that shit for five years.

12:45am and I'm back and still on a high from Baby E's gut-out win.  Seriously, Love All and I were sprinting around the IW grounds trying to burn off our adrenaline high.

Lot's of highlights and lowlights today:

• Got to the grounds right at 11am.  Dina and Vez were warming up on the field.  Had a very animated conversation about...something.
• Dina and Muzz were practicing side by side.  At one point, Muzz sat on the bench facing Dina's court because it was in the shade.  Dina proceeded to blast every ball out.  Please don't be smitten by Muzz.  All of Europe might end up in flames after that breakup.
• Watched Boots vs. Baby Rad.  Sven and Fer were there watching.  Nice win for Boots but a really solid performance from Uzi.  It's entirely possible that she is the more talented Radwanska.  At least in tennis.  Agi owns the artistic talent.
• Watched about 9 games of Vika/Peer.  More on Vika later.  Let's just say that I'm not a fan.  She sucks.  KId needs to STFU.
• Wanted to get a good seat for Safin/Isner so I saw the last few games of Elf/Douche Stamp.  So frickin' glad Elf won.  Afterwards, Elf was adorable.  In his on court interview he thanked the crowd for coming early for the Safin match to watch him play.  Then, when he had autograph balls to hit to the crowd he put them in his pocket because he didn't think the crowd was cheering loud enough. 
• Sat for Safin/Isner in front of the most annoying tennis fans ever.  Sample comment at 1-1 in the first set: "Look at his body language.  Look at how he's lumbering around like that.  Isner's already in his head and he's imploding."  Um...have you ever WATCHED him?
• Sad for Maratski but Isner played well.  He was impossible to break.  His serve is a sight to see live.  The angles he can get are just insane.  Crowd gave a huge ovation as Marat left the court.
• Isner is the only dude on tour that can make Marat look wee.   Nutty.
• According to Victoria, who was watching Dina on center court, Dina shanked a serve right as Marat was being introduced on Court 2.  I guess you can hear the PA from Court 2 in there.  Oh, Dina.
• Spotted: Sven and Cahill sitting on a bench together by the practice courts watching Sorana Cirstea.
• Saw Zeljko walking around the grounds.  He is surprisingly short.
• Hung out by the practice field for a few hours watching players go by.  Dina was cooling down after her match.  Agi/Bepa jogging laps after their dubs win.  The BryBros, A-Rod, and Daveed all warming up for their matches.  Roger.  Agnes crying as she walked back from her loss to Agi.  Gimelstob walked by.  Isner, the Sisters Bonderenko, etc.  Basically we were waiting for Ana to come out to warm up for her match.
• Which she did.  More importantly, DRAGANA sighting!  She is a classy lady.  Victoria, Love All and I watched Ana's practice but spent most of the time marveling at Dragana.  We're not entirely convinced that Ana came from that womb.  She must look at Ana and wonder when the kid is going to grow out of this tennis thing.  Also saw Marcin and his wife and kids.  Totes adorbs.
• Marcin practicing with Ana: "I'm slow.  Like an elephant."  I had to run away to bust out laughing.
• Killed time during Roddick's match. 
• Victoria scored some tix for us to get to the lower level for Ana's match.  Awesome sauce.
• Nyanafan, Love All, and I sat 6 rows back from one baseline.  Victoria was first row on the other won.
• We cheered mercilessly for Ana.  We're kind of famous now.  Ana tried to hit the ball to us specifically.  Marcin and Craig kept looking over at us.  We proudly waved.
• Tense match.  Ana won on pure guts.  We felt really bad about having to root against Flavs.  Ana's serve was wonky and her groundstrokes came and went.  Bottom line, she got passive after she raced to her 4-0 lead in the first and then struggled to find the right balance between being aggressive and pulling back.  Note to Baby E: when in doubt, hit the damn ball.
• Both Ana and Flavs were in tears after the match.  This one meant a lot to both of them.
• Beer count: 5

Masha's BFF, Camilla Belle, watching the Fernando/Gasquet match.  She's recently been linked to Robert Pattison and one of the JoBros.  Apparently the ATP commentators were referencing a girlfriend during the broadcast?  Maybe they were referring to her.

I highly doubt it though.  I will keep my eyes peeled though.

Did Rafa Monopolize All The Colors At Nike?

I'm loving the fact that Fred Perry has realized there are more colors than just white and grey.  The new blue kit actually makes Muzz look young and fresh.  So far there are no lingering effects of the virus that knocked him out of most of the post-AO action.  He cruised past PHM.

As for Fed's new Nike kit, nein danke.  Dude needs a collar.  He looks off without one. Nevertheless, he beat Dr. Ivo today.

As for the rest of the day for the men, it sucked to be French.  Gilles, Reeshie, and Jo all crashed out.  That's a lot of pretty to be leaving IW.  No more French soccer matches on the practice fields?  BOO.

I So Tired....

12:20am and I'm back in the hotel.  Surprisingly long day but very successful.

• Saw Dina practice this morning.  Lots of unintentional hilarity.  Got her autograph.  She stood and signed almost all of them and did not once acknowledged anyone.
• Ana hit the practice courts next.  More football and hand/eye coordination stuff.  Horsing around a lot with Scott.  I've decided that Ana/Scott have a total big brother/kid sister relationship.  In the least Safin way possible.  They're really cute. 
• JMDP and Nalby practicing together.  Still not convinced they're all that friendly with each other.
• Headed over to watch Flavs/Haynes.  Haynes played really well in the first set apparently.  But my arrival pretty much turned it all around as Flavs broke almost as soon as my ass hit the bleachers.  Wanted to stick around for Fer/Gasquet but Blah just had to fuck up my day and lose quickly.  So headed over to Stadium court to watch Ana/Dulko.  Sat with mkeller, Love All, nyanafan, and Victoria.  Lots of fun Forty Deuce times.  Pretty sure we confused the crap out of everyone around us.
• Ran over to see the last few points of the Elf/Nalby dubs match.  They came back in the super-tiebreak to take the match.  With Roddick playing doubles and Fed on center court, we were able to get solid front row seats for The Marat's doubles match.  Mkeller got the entire crowd to laugh when she did her now patented "S-A-F-I-N, that is who we want to win" and "M-A-R-A-T, I want you to marry me" cheers.  PHM pretty much lost it for him (dude couldn't hold his serve), but as they walked off Marat acknowledged us and gave us a nice smile.  Mkeller is still passed out.
• Saw Sven!  Said hello.  He's supernice and adorable.  He was on court with Sania, who I presume is sticking around because Sven is still here with Boots.
• Mkeller and I snuck into a box suite for Dani's match.  It was AWESOME.  Until we got kicked out.  But I stole a Powerade anyway.  Suck it, Indian Wells!
• Dani's match took FOREVER.  Happy she won but mucho respect for Cetkovska.  She played well and hit some nice shots.  She's come a long way from a 60 60 bageling at the manhands of Baby E.
• Stuck around and watched Igor beat Jo.  That was surprising.  We snuck down to the lower level after the first set (thanks for the tip, Victoria!) and sat behind MaKiri.  She's adorable and had a super awesome green Stella McCartney jacket.  Nyanafan, mkeller, and I couldn't stop staring at it.  
• A-Rod signed autographs.  Not that I'd know.
• Beer count: 6

IW: Saturday Results

Gonzo and Lleyton are still playing but I'm wiped and went home.  Here's the rundown of today's action packed day.

 

No major surprises on the men's side.  The only match I actually watched for a significant amount of time was the Gilles/Rendy match, which was awesome.  For those who were watching it on stream/TV, the crowd was not being obnoxious or booing.  When Gilly fans started chanting "Si-Mon, clap, clap, clap" the Rendy fans would yell a prolonged "Luuuuuuuuuuu."  It was all in good fun.

I sat with mkeller by a bunch of Gilly fans who kept saying our favorite chant.  After Gilly would hit a winner the guy would yell "Simon Says Winner!"  You have to hear it to understand why it's funny.  But needless to say mkeller and I will be using that line pretty much FOREVER.

There was a lot of buzz around the grounds when Fed and Muzz were stuck in their tight first sets.  Lots of buzz about Tsonga and Fer, too.  People seemed really to eager to watch their matches.  Glad they both won.

Of course, once again, the ladies provided all the drama today.  Seeds were falling left and right and you heard a lot of shock on the grounds.  JJ's loss to Pavs wasn't a huge shock.  We know JJ is struggling and Pavs has some buzz as a future star.  That said, Pavs' game was really impressive.  Very Russian and very effective.  I have no confidence that she can continue her steady level through the tourney, but this is obviously a huge win for her.

The real shockers were the bouncing of Lena, Domi, Cone, and Zheng.  Lena was particularly listless, as she admitted in her post-match presser.  Cetkovska played well, but Lena was a step slower and had no fire.  6-1 in the third?  Yikes.
