Day 1 saw no major surprises. The closest thing to a surprise was the hard hitting, slow moving Kleybanova taking out #6 seed Kaia Kanepi, 1 and 4. Vika and Mono steamrolled the competition, dropping 2 and 3 games along the way, respectively. In fact, Vika's win over K. Bond was particularly notable to me not because she won but because she won 0 and 2. That's gotta say something about her form.
Here are your ladies' scores:
(2) Victoria Azarenka (BLR) d. Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR) 60 62
(3) Marion Bartoli (FRA) d. (WC) Monika Wejnert (AUS) 61 62
Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) d. (6) Kaia Kanepi (EST) 61 64
Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) d. Monica Niculescu (ROU) 67(2) 64 64
Jarmila Gajdosova (SVK) d. Peng Shuai (CHN) 64 62
As for the men, it's always an adventure with Reeshie, isn't it? He was pushed to three sets by fellow Pastry Marc Gicquel. He dropped the first set at 4 but seemed to find his form in the final two sets, winning them handily at 2 and 2.
The Evil One continued his evil ways, dusting Querrey California, 3 and 3, and Robbie Ginepri fell to Apricot Bars in three sets. But luckily for the Red, White, and Blue, Taylor Dent is still around to represent. So there's that.
Here are your scores:
[7] R Gasquet (FRA) d M Gicquel (FRA) 46 62 62
T Dent (USA) vs S Darcis (BEL) 76(0) 62
[4] R Soderling (SWE) d S Querrey (USA) 63 63
J Benneteau (FRA) d R Ginepri (USA) 36 63 75
