A few of you have hinted at this in today's comments in response to my general concern that JJ doesn't look all that into being in Doha right now. Well, based her comments in this article, it almost sounds like she's treating the YEC has a cherry on top of a good season, as opposed to a trophy she needs to validate her season:
“I don’t have any pressure because no matter how I play here, I am finishing as the number one player in the world. (Now) I can just go out and enjoy my tennis and hopefully have a good tournament. If I do well here, my (points) lead will be even better and it will be tougher for the players to catch me next year,” Jankovic said yesterday.
“The more weeks I spend on the number one position, the better (for me). So, I would love to do it and I will try my best to do well here,” the 23-year-old, who lost the US Open final to Serena in September, said.
Maybe she's just playing possum and trying to alleviate any pressure she may feel to perform well here, which is a good thing because she doesn't play all that well under pressure or stress. But if this is actually insight into her psyche going into this tournament, I'm a little worried for her.
I guess we'll find out in a few hours.
