Putting aside the Wimbledon final, this was quite possibly the most awesome men's match of the year. Gilles Simon, aka Commodus, aka Chicken Legs, aka Baby Owl, did it. He outworked, outlasted, outwitted, outguiled, and outgutted The Bull, 46 75 76(6). This was an amazing match and I can't wait to get home and watch it again.
After the week he's had, is it any doubt that Commodus is indestructable? All of his wins have been in three sets, 3/4 have gone to third set tie breakers, and in all of them he was a break down in the third set.
Also, let's face it, Gilly , as I've said before, is the ATP JJ. A pure counterpuncher and fluffy serve, yes, but he's got the fight, the guts, and the relentless athletic ability to outrun his opponents. And that was nowhere more impressive than in the show he put on by the normally relentless Rafa, who rarely, if ever, gets outrun. Much like JJ, Gilly plays a unique game and he's shown it can be successful against the big hitters. And he does it all with a hint of smile that seems to acknowledge the absolute ridiculousness of the situation. Thankfully, unlike JJ, he does it all sans makeup, glitter, and the splits.
So really, he's not JJ at all.
I'm on cloud nine, folks. I love Rafa, but I love tennis more. And today was a great day for high quality tennis, even if my faves didn't win. I am officially on the Muzzah (more on that in a sec), Gilly trains.
