In the wake of Lindsay's withdrawal, some surprising results down at Stanford today.
- Wozniak (Q) d. Schiavone (8) 26 63 62
- Cibulkova d. Petrova (7) 64 36 63
- Keothavong (Q) d. Mirza 76(4) 61
- Larcher De Brito (Q) d. Dulko 75 76(1)
- Stosur (LL) d. Rodionova 63 61
The results remind me of the MLB playoffs. Those teams that have to fight to the wire to make the playoffs or gain the wildcard end up playing much better than the teams that clinch early. It's all about momentum, about having to play for your life and then taking that intensity into the tournament. Not to mention the fact that in this particular case, with the start of the hardcourt season, the qualifiers have more hardcourt matches under their belts going into the tourney.
I doubt we'll see too many surprises tomorrow, though there are some interesting matches. Peer v. Crazy Chakky, Dani H v. her BFF Ai Sugiyama, and ReRe v. the Siren Whistle Larcher De Brito. Good thing they're not broadcasting that last one. I'd definitely have to watch on mute.
